Friday, 2 August, 2019, 09:00 - 17:00


First stop of the day will be the Karst museum. We will learn main aspects of the Karst and its phennomena. Because of its unique natural and cultural landscape, the karst area in western Slovenia, the Kras, is world famous. After that, we drive to Smrekar Homestead. They will serve us with homemade cold cuts and dishes, that will be accompanied with wine degustation. We will continue to Postojna cave; the world's most captivating cave with magnificent cave formations and diverse fauna. We will take an unforgettable ride on Postojna Cave's underground train and experience a fascinating subterranean paradise shaped by tiny droplets over millions of years.

First we drive to Hrastovlje where we visit the fortified church of the Holy Trinity which is set on a hill in the tiny village of Hrastovlje. It is a small church, but inside the walls and the ceiling are covered with old frescoes. The famous Dance Macabre is one of the best preserved frescos. Extraordinary to see : every figure, from peasants to kings, walk towards a dug grave. We continue through the coastal hinterland towards the Soline Nature Park, to discover the ages old traditions of salt production in the natural habitat of numerous birds and other animals. End the tour with a walk through historical Piran, the most picturesque town on the Slovenian coast. Piran is a tourist highlight of the Slovenian coast, strongly influenced by the old Venetian Republic. Walk through its narrow medieval streets wedged between beautiful houses, churches and squares and enjoy the breeze that blows from the sea. After lunch, we will have some free time for bathing in the sea before returning to Ljubljana.

On this day trip of eastern Slovenia our first stop will be at Slovenske Konjice, a lovely little old town, from where we will continue to the nearby Žiče to visit an old charterhouse, the first of its kind outside French and Italian borders. Before we continue to Maribor, we will stop at organic farm, where we will try home made food. Continue to Maribor, one of the top attractions in Slovenia, is the home of the oldest grapevine in the world, which is 400 years old and it is marked in the Guinness book of records. A walk through the old town of Maribor, combined with some wine tasting, makes this trip a true highlight of the day.
